My program will focus on the aphid vector, evaluating resistance in selected potato breeding lines using aphid inoculations. Will aphid-born infections behave differently from seed-born or mechanical infections on different potato lines? We will investigate how well aphids transmit different PVY strains, how strain mixtures affect aphid transmission, and explore aphid seasonal life history and chemical control. Hairy nightshade can harbor PVY and aphids and we will assist in tracking aphid populations and virus incidence on this weed to better understand the role weeds play in PVY epidemics on potato.
