My research program focuses on characterizing PVY isolates collected by seed certifiers and researchers. How do the PVY isolates differ from each other and what types of symptoms do they cause in potatoes? We must know what to look for in potato to grow clean seed. And, we need to comprehend how new PVY isolates might arise to devise ways to prevent their formation. We will characterize isolates genetically, serologically, with virus symptom indicator plants, with differential potato cultivars, and by genome sequencing. Genome sequences will be available to seed certification agencies submitting isolates. My lab will provide pure cultures of various PVY recombinant strains from Idaho, Wisconsin, or New York, for potato genetic improvement.
