The overall goal of this project is to improve current PVY management strategies, based on industry needs, to reduce overall levels of PVY and prevent the spread of necrotic strains.
Specifically, we will
1) work with seed certification agencies to develop new tools to better identify PVY and eliminate it from seed stocks, including training aids and improved diagnostics for post harvest testing of the seed tuber crop.
2) work with breeders to develop PVY resistant cultivars and those with recognizable symptoms by evaluating them in regional trials against a range of PVY strains.
3) work with growers to develop cost effective, on-farm virus control strategies aimed at reducing PVY in potato seed and controlling its spread in the crop.
Each outlined objective meets current needs as defined by the potato industry.
